First, just want to say Good Work and keep it up! I know we all know how hard it is to get and stay motivated.
Sorry for lack of posting.
To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was even going to write on here, maybe it was because I didn’t feel as motivated and didn’t want to log about what I’ve done and what I haven’t done. But I’ve been keeping up with your posts and thought…maybe I’ll try it out and by doing that, it will get me to be more motivated. So thanks to you guys for reading about your progress.
Can I just say, it’s so hard to get to be where you want to be.
Ever since joining LA Fitness back in February 2010, I’ve been steadily going to the gym with not that much to show for it. In the beginning I went a steady 3x a week (one training+20 mins cardio after and two classes) and weight slowly started to drop and I did notice it a bit, but once I stopped going steadily, I’m just kind of in this one spot. Not going steadily means, trainer once + cardio for 10 – 15 mins sometimes none and one class, sometimes none. As for diet, I was good during the week, but weekends I was whatever.
I know it costs a lot of $, but I’m kind of glad I got suckered into getting my trainer. At least it gets me going to the gym once a week, now it’s twice a week with my trainer.
I have two sessions with my trainer and I’ve scheduled them for Monday and Thursdays. I did this on purpose because my goal is to go to the gym 4x a week. I used to have training on Tuesday and Thursday and then go to the class on Wednesdays. Now that I have them Monday and Thursday, I can do the classes on Tuesday and Thursday (one is boot camp-more cardio, the other one is total body conditioning – both cardio and weights). I like doing the classes because it helps me go to the gym more than doing stuff on my own. It’s hard not having a buddy and maybe I just feel intimidated doing the machines on my own – I know I shouldn’t but I do. Also with the classes, I have Karen (Mary’s sister) as a buddy, knowing she goes, makes me go.
As for meals, I'm not consistent with getting my 5 meals a day. I don’t have an excuse, I have stuff for my snacks in the fridge at work. Is it bad when I don’t want to get up from my desk to go grab my yogurt and fruit from the fridge cuz that means I need to clean the bowl after? Yeah…I know…lazzyy.
Last week, I only did 45 mins Elliptical and shoveled the snow for 1hr….:S My trainer was away for the week so I didn’t go to the gym. No excuses I know.
So for this week I had a crazy ass training session yesterday – like puking feeling, which I guess is good. MONDAY FEB 7: Warm up – 5 mins Ellip Alternating sets: Barbell Squats w/ Hammersmith machine – 3 sets of 15 reps and I forget the weight she put on there, but it was heavvvy,
Jump squats around the gym – 3 sets of 30 reps
Finished with Leg Curls – 3 sets of 15 reps @ 20lbs? don't remember
Meal 1: Coffee with Skim and Splenda ¾ cup Special K Vanilla almond Cereal with ¾ Skim 1 slice Rye with PB 2 egg whites
Meal 2: Salad with chicken breast seasoned with garlic powder, paprika (love it), black pepper and little sea salt and 2tbsp balsamic vinigerette
Meal 3: 2 clementines
Pre Meal 4: Banana and Nature Valley Almond bar
Post Meal 5: steamed Broccoli with 4 slices of tofu seasoned with garlic powder, paprika (love it), black pepper and little sea salt (this is my standard seasoning mix)
Also I like snacking…not meals…but snacking…which usually consists of crackers and a slice of chedder…and I bought cappuccino thins from Ikea…so i snack on these too...
Ok..that’s it. Sorry if my post is all over the place and I make up my own gym lingo haha
thank you janey for adding to my daily reading. :)
but seriously, im glad you posted. and the best part: it was honest. it takes a lot to admit excuses and insecurities. especially publicly.
you def got the theory down. u know what works for you. you know what you gotta work on. its just putting it into practice. which we all struggle with.
its hard. but its worth it.
just keep sticking at it. just like you have been.
i hope you keep blogging. the sincerity and honesty makes this the best entry on this page thus far. heh.
and with the meals. yes. get off ur ass and get to the fridge. lol. if washing the bowl is that bad. put a bag of almonds and/or bars in your desk drawer. i'm gonna bug u about it now while im at work. lol. :)
i too am glad that you posted. like jen, i admire your honesty and really commend you on your hard work. you may not notice it, but you have made significant changes while at the gym. your changes are part of the reason that i got back into it. i figured that if you were able to push it and get results, that i too should be able to get err done!
i really do hope that u get some sort of motivation from this, more then anything. you did great and you wavered a bit. but you know it, and you have admitted it. now lets get back on it and keep going! i think we've all proved it to ourselves at one time or another, and we know its worth it. we'll all be here to help support eachother, so let's pick it up and kick some ass!
Soo I wrote up a long blog on my lunch…only to have it get erased. Super Annoying.
Anyways, I’ll try to remember what I wrote.
Tuesday Feb 8: No Gym today. It would have been bootcamp day. Legs were still super sore from training on Monday. Probably because I was out of it for a week and not enough fluids. I need to drink more.
Also did get five proper meals in either…
Meal 1: Coffee with Skim and Splenda ¾ cup Special K Vanilla almond Cereal with ¾ Skim 1 slice Rye with PB 2 egg whites
Meal 2: Salad with chicken breast seasoned with garlic powder, paprika (love it), black pepper and little sea salt and 2tbsp balsamic vinigerette
Meal 3: Coffee, splenda and skim 3 cappuccino thins…
Meal 4: 1 Tilapia Fillet Steamed broccoli Mashed Cauliflower ( I like this better than whole cauliflower and it’s kind of like mashed potatoes haha)
Because I was hungry… Meal 5: Special K Vanilla Almond Cereal with Skim
So I find it hard to eat what I want and when I want, when you’re not just worrying about yourself. So it’s just me and my dad at home and I try to make him eat what I eat, but sometimes it’s just hard. Because either I miss the gym to make dinner (because coming home from the gym is 8 then gotta make dinner, too late) or I make my dad wait for me to eat. I know my plan is to go to the gym 4 times a week, but I feel bad leaving my dad to be by himself, which means him making his own thing or grabbing take out (and usually none of it is healthy). I mean I know I have to go to the gym, I guess I just have to work harder at either planning ahead when I’ll cook, or do dinner with my dad two times a week where we eat later. I will figure it out.
So I was eating chicken salads for a while, and I think I started to get “bored” with it. So had to look for something new…and I think I found it, at least for now. Seriously, its good, tasty, healthy and fast and easy. If you’re interested, here’s the recipe, sure parchment pouch seems fancy, but it’s good! So try it haha. I made the 4 and brought one for lunch as well. I’m sure you could do it without the pouch, but I think the steam makes it cook evenly and so that you don’t dry out the fish.
Black Bean Tilapia 4 tilapia fillets or whatever fish 1/4tsp (1 mL) salt 1/4tsp (1 mL) pepper 4tsp (18 mL) julienned gingerroot 4tsp (18 mL) vegetable oil 4tsp (18 mL) black bean sauce 2tsp (10 mL) rice vinegar 1clove of garlic, minced 1red hot pepper or green hot pepper, thinly sliced (optional) 1/2onions, thinly sliced
Preparation: Preheat oven to 400. In large bowl, stir together ginger, oil, black bean sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, hot pepper (if using) and onion. Add fish, turning to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes. Cut four 15-inch (38 cm) squares of parchment paper, place one fillet in each one with the mixings as well and fold all the edges so you’re left with a pouch of fish. Bake on baking sheet in 400°F (200°C) oven for about 10 minutes. Enjoy!
I think today was a good day, despite the fact that my legs are SUPER sore. Like seriously sore. My trainer really worked me hard on Monday.
Wed Feb 9:
Yay me. I didn't want to go today, but I did.
Did the Total Body Conditioning class, which consists of: - Cardio - Squats - Forward and back lunges - Ab work: core, lower, side etc - Planks: forward and side - Push ups - Tricep dips - Biceps curls - Tricep rows - Reverse flys
All exercises were done with two 5lbs weights. Anyways I can't remember all the exercises, but that's the jist of it.
Meal 1: Coffee with Skim and Splenda ¾ cup Special K Vanilla almond Cereal with ¾ Skim 1 slice Rye with PB 2 egg whites
Meal 5: Had to do something so didn't eat right after working out - chinese veggies with garlic - steamed egg - 5 small pieces chinese roast pork - 8 small slices of chinese bbq pork Got home late so just ate what my Dad had for dinner.
Meal 1: Coffee with Skim and Splenda ¾ cup Cereal with ¾ Skim 2 slices dark rye with PB No eggs today cuz they exploded this morning....boo
Meal 2: Whole Wheat wrap with chicken breast, mustard, black pepper, lettuce, slice of swiss and carrots on the side Coffee with splenda and skim 3 cappuccino thins - Jen goldfish's are you're weakness, Cappuccino thins are mine...a nice sweet treat for the afternoon.
Meal 3 pre: Nature Valley Almond Bar and 8 crackers.
Meal 4 post: Tofu, corn and brown rice seasoned with garlic, black pepper, paprika, little sea salt, rice vinegar, little sesame oil. Kinda of like a Veggie Fried Rice Mmmm
Also, the lbs I did for the barbell squat was 70 and 40 for the leg curls.
Didn't get to eat 5 meals cuz work was actually busy today. Had my breakfast at 9, lunch at 2, bar at 6 etc. Tomorrow will be different, had a chance to make dinner, so I had enough for lunch as well.
Soo the week is over and I only got in 3 workouts, maybe i'll get one more in to make my 4 days.
Hello Friends....(warning, this is not an exercise entry...I know it should be, but just gonna be a little rant)
It haaas been quiet on here...Sorry about that.
Especially for me.
Last week was crazy crazy stressful and just emotional for me. Some people like to workout when they're stressed or going through stuff, cuz it helps them relax...me not so much.
I would have to say that I am an emotional eater...Not to say that I have been eating horrible since my last entry, I just haven't been as conscious with what I have been eating and going out of my way to find something to eat thats healthy OR keeping track of eating 5/6 meals a day. For example, went to greek food and instead of getting the full dinner, just had pork on a pita with ztaziki..
Anyways, as you all know, last week was pretty much prepping for my sister's spur of the moment wedding...i.e. 2.5 weeks notice............
Fam came up from SF so chilling with them too and making the cake and such. It was just BUSY and on top of that work is actually busy now. So that is stressing me out as well.
After all the wedding hoopla, I've been pretty blah since Sunday and have not worked out all this week either. Horrible yes I know. Also have not been eating properly either. I.e. yogurt and granola and coffee in the morning (or egg whites), nothing really for lunch...maybe some fruit - really into pineapple right now, dinner something like carrots with hummus. MY lack of eating has been due to just working through lunch to get my shit done and coming home and being tired or just nothing wanting to really eat anything.
If you remember in my last entry, I was already feeling like not wanting to work out and with the wedding and work, it has just kinda dragged on. I know I don't work out all the time or everyday and 4 times a week is proabbly not that good. But after about a year I've hit a plateau...and I think that's proabbly why I'm starting to think...OK...i'm working out, i'm eating well...why is nothign happening or why am I just at a stand still? I know that shouldn't stop be from working out. Cuz thats' stupid. Not doing anything at all, is not going to help me get out of this plateau....
The next little while is going to continue to be busy busy with work, cakes, weddings and my course that I have to pass or else...
I know..no excuse, we're all busy.
Anyways...hopefully next week will be better.
Should end this now, before this starts getting longer than it already is..
Sorry again for my lack of effort the past two weeks.
I'm giving up sweets for lent as well as not biting my nails...I know bad habit :S
Sweets - cookies, cakes, cupcakes, scones, desserts, anything from Starbucks or Second Cup, ice cream, chocolate, etc etc.
Today was Cake Day at work....they looked good, but I gave my Cake away to my co-worker cuz it was her sons bday.
I also went to get a coffee at Starbucks so that I could get the free sweet treat, which I also gave up to my boss....I just wanted to get something free haha..
ok that is all.
Actually since yesterday been craving a freshly baked cookie..boo...
this 'very-lo' cal diet will help u lose weight but not sustain it. ure going to lose muscle. so when u start eating more again or when you go out, say on the wknd and have 'whatever', ure body is gonna be in starvation mode and store everything as fat. plus because uve lost muscle, u have less 'good/lean' mass helping u burn calories.
not to mention the bleh attitude is also secondary to not getting enough cals in. something that i am guilty of all the time.
b/c ure not eating as much id switch up what u r snackin on during work.
so i'd be mindful of the yogurt and fruit that u eat as well.
just look at the yogurt label and make sure it isnt loaded w/ sugar.
pineapple is a very sugary fruit. i know u like it. so add nuts to ur lunch instead of depriving urself.
hummus is great. try bringing it for lunch. add broccolli/celery/peppers to the carrots.
flavoured cans of tuna r an easy grab and go meal.
its good that u gave up sugar. b/c the insulin spike will again cause ur body to store fat.
i know its hard being busy. and how the last thing u want to do after a long day at work is trek to the gym. that was my reason for not being consistent w/ the gym all of medschool.
try working out at home. push-ups. squats. lunges. planks. etc. thats what i do. its all u need.
dun give up. regardless of the plateau. like i told u before...ur efforts are shown in the pictures.
the struggle takes time. u'll find ur groove again.
no need to apologize janey! you are doing really well, and i agree with jen that we can see the difference.
we all get into funks. when i get into funks i eat horribly (and not as in, not eating. i just eat everything) lol. i agree with jen that maybe some small changes will help you get back into it.
to be honest, try working out with someone else for one workout. sometime that is enough to motivate you and get you going again. or do a workout that you know you can kill and that will usually get you in a good mood about training.

After trying to say it...I realize that it's not TONIGHT....but TIGHT just spelt Toight...

feeling like not working out..
maybe it's just cuz i'm tired...
wow janey. ur diets been really good this week.
im impressed.
keep up the good work buddy.
Food does sound good.
Keep at it Janey!
Sorry again for my lack of effort the past two weeks.
oh and I forgot to add..
Actually since yesterday been craving a freshly baked cookie..boo...
i think that its good u got this off ur chest.
and like i said before. i admire ur honesty.
this 'very-lo' cal diet will help u lose weight but not sustain it. ure going to lose muscle. so when u start eating more again or when you go out, say on the wknd and have 'whatever', ure body is gonna be in starvation mode and store everything as fat. plus because uve lost muscle, u have less 'good/lean' mass helping u burn calories.
not to mention the bleh attitude is also secondary to not getting enough cals in. something that i am guilty of all the time.
b/c ure not eating as much id switch up what u r snackin on during work.
so i'd be mindful of the yogurt and fruit that u eat as well.
just look at the yogurt label and make sure it isnt loaded w/ sugar.
pineapple is a very sugary fruit. i know u like it. so add nuts to ur lunch instead of depriving urself.
hummus is great. try bringing it for lunch. add broccolli/celery/peppers to the carrots.
flavoured cans of tuna r an easy grab and go meal.
its good that u gave up sugar. b/c the insulin spike will again cause ur body to store fat.
i know its hard being busy. and how the last thing u want to do after a long day at work is trek to the gym. that was my reason for not being consistent w/ the gym all of medschool.
try working out at home. push-ups. squats. lunges. planks. etc. thats what i do. its all u need.
dun give up. regardless of the plateau. like i told u before...ur efforts are shown in the pictures.
the struggle takes time. u'll find ur groove again.
good post.
and stop being so hard on urself.
side note: i didnt get to try those cappucino thins when u came.
no need to apologize janey! you are doing really well, and i agree with jen that we can see the difference.
we all get into funks. when i get into funks i eat horribly (and not as in, not eating. i just eat everything) lol. i agree with jen that maybe some small changes will help you get back into it.
to be honest, try working out with someone else for one workout. sometime that is enough to motivate you and get you going again. or do a workout that you know you can kill and that will usually get you in a good mood about training.
dont give up, you're kicking ass!
Just wanted to say after seeing you at the fitting on Friday you are looking FANTASTIC!!! Janey.
